CNG Fuels case study

FGEN’s investment in CNG Fuels supports the decarbonisation of one of the most emissions-intensive segments of the UK transport sector through the development and operation of large-scale biomethane refuelling infrastructure.

The transport sector remains the largest source of carbon dioxide emissions in the UK, with heavy goods vehicles responsible for approximately 17% of UK transport greenhouse gas emissions (GHGs), despite only representing 5% of UK traffic.

CNG Fuels is Europe’s largest supplier of 100% renewable biomethane to transport, and in the UK, operates a growing nationwide network of biomethane refuelling stations supplying renewable Bio-CNG to heavy goods vehicle fleets.

CNG Fuels currently supplies more than 50% of UK truck biomethane demand and has over 95% share of the UK CNG truck market.

Bio-CNG, (or compressed biomethane) differs from fossil-derived CNG/LNG (Liquified Natural Gas) as it is typically sourced from waste products such as food, animal & wastewater, generated by anaerobic digestion plants. It is a cheaper, cleaner, and quieter alternative to running an HGV fleet compared to conventional diesel.

CNG Fuels supplies only 100% sustainable and renewable Bio-CNG at its stations and therefore offers fleet operators the opportunity to substantially lower their emissions.

By fixing the fuel duty for natural gas until 2032, the UK government has committed to maintaining a clear advantage for gas powered vehicles, as part of measures supporting the UK’s target of net zero emissions by 2050. Rising demand for 100% renewable biomethane in transport is therefore driving production in the UK and internationally.

CNG Fuels operates 16 stations across the UK and supplies fuel to more than 2,250 vehicles serving over 165 fleet customers. Customers include several of the UK’s leading logistics and retail operators, including M&S, Tesco, Aldi, Lidl, Co-Op, Waitrose, John Lewis, DHL, Warburtons and Amazon.
